There are actually two.

The first is in the Indian Ocean, about 220 miles south of the island of Java in Indonesia. That Christmas Island is administered by Australia. Latitude 10° 30' S, longitude 106° E.

The second is in the Pacific, and more commonly known today as Kiritimati (the pidgen form of "Christmas"). That island is about 1200 miles due south of Hawaii, and is part of the nation of Kiribati. Latitude 2° N, longitude 157° W.

The Territory of Christmas Island is a small, non-self-governing territory of Australia located in the Indian Ocean, 2600 kilometers (1600 mi) northwest of Perth in Western Australia and 500 kilometers (300 mi) south of Jakarta, Indonesia.

It maintains about 1,600 residents who live in a number of "settlement areas" on the northern tip of the island: Flying Fish Cove (also known as "The Settlement"), Silver City, Kampong, Poon Saan and Drumsite.
