Not all characteristics work equally well. First, the fish need to be over a year old, and you can only tell them apart when they're in breeding condition. The tubercles and vent appearance are the most reliable of the characteristics.

Mature male goldfish will have tubercles appearing on their gill plate. This looks like white spot but they appears on the gill plates and pectoral fins.

Attached is an image of a male goldfish with tubercles .....http://homepage2.nifty.com/rompish/basic/img/sanran-oiboshi.jpg

On males their anal vent tends to concave (sunk in) and on the female their anal vent or breeding tube during mating season is convex (sticking out).

Attached is an image of both male and female, the male is on the left and female on the right. http://www.chinagoldfish.net/text/gongmu.JPG

Hopes this helps.

The one that lift the toilet seat when he goes is the male one. The one that seems to be talking a lot is the female one.
