As stated eloquently by the other two gentlemen - - - loyalty to Virginia. Would Add - - - Misguided Patriotism - - - Robert E Lee if he had only had to courage if any prominent Southerner had had the courage to save "Damn Slavery, it does need to end." But none were willing to buck those like Jefferson Davis who had plotted for years to rip the South away from the Union. Instead Lee ended up supporting Jefferson Davis a Mississippi slave-master who thought himself such a military genius that he rarely listened to Lee's wise councel.

His loyalties laid with his home state of Virginia. When they went left the Union so did he.

He decided that he couldn't take the field against fellow Virginians, and that his true allegiance was to Virginia and the South.
