We start to learn English as our first foreign language at school when we are about 8-9 years old. When we are 12-13 we begin to learn a second foreign language - French, Spanish or German. And when we are 15-16 we have the choice to learn a third modern foreign language (French, German, Spanish, Russian, Italian, Japanese, Chinese and a few more) So yes, quite a few Swedes speak French. However, in general we speak English so much better than we speak our second or third foreign language, so even if we learnt French at school, lots of us prefer to use English when talking to Frenchmen.

While Swedish is their home language, I'm sure some might know how to speak French--just as some Americans speak other languages besides English.

I'm sure it's taught in the school system, as most Europeans are encouraged to be multi-lingual.
