You can get a pretty good virus and spyware scan online by TrendMicro's Housecall.
Then follow some of the other advice you have been given: download and install anti-virus, spyware, and firewall protection. Get all you need from download.com (a good source for free and commercial products; read manufacturers' info,
CNet editors' reviews for some products; users' reviews for most).

well, then its pretty much impossible to remove it completely. even you know where the root is. there are some anti-virus website like Norton and Mcafee, they have online scan for free. it tells you where the detected virus are. i am not sure if it can also help you to remove them. if not, just remove them manually.
but anyway, you should get an anti-virus software.

First take it to some Best Buy or Circuit City for the virus to be removed. Then buy McAfee Security Center........it's only $40-50 per year to be protected.....you get firewall, virus protection, spamkiller, parental controls, and such

You should install anti-virus software on your computer to help keep it healthy.
Try running the security check from Symantec to clean your computer. http://www.symantec.com/home_homeoffice/security_response/index.jsp
After, install anti-virus software like AVG Free Edition. http://www.download.com/AVG-Anti-Virus-Free-Edition/3000-2239_4-10695030.html?tag=lst-0-1
