The geeksquad router is protected by a password when I try to log into their wireless internet. My Aunt has the router in her room, but the password is not on the bottom. My Aunt is able to use her wireless internet, but because I don't have the password I am not able to. When we go onto her laptop, the password appears as black dots. Is there a way to decode it so I am able to plug it into the geeksquad password area on my laptop? My laptop has wireless but I need that pass key thing from geeksquad. Is there somewhere else I can get it? My aunt says that Geeksquad will charge you $70 for them to help you over the phone.

PLEASE HELP...it is boring waiting to go on the internet when I have a perfectly good computer that is just 5 or 13 characters away from the World Wide Web

Ok, there is one slight problem with the information you gave us. Geeksquad does not manufacture routers they just install the devices. Chances are that they used either Linksys or Netgear as they are the top two. I do not think that there is a way to 'decode' the black dots because I think that they are not actually encoded or anything like that. It is just the way the computer is displaying the text. The best way to fix this is to log onto your router.
Now, to do that go into Internet Explorer and in the address bar type 192.168.1.1(it is almost definetly 192.168.1 and then either 1 or 100 or something with 1's and and 0's. 101 could also work. 192.168.1.1 is the most probable though.) this should bring up a log in box. For this you need to know whether you have linksys or netgear. This should be written on the box itself.
Also, you need to hope that Geeksquad did not change the password for the box. I don't think they would without telling you so we'll go with the hope that they didn't.

If you have netgear then the username should be admin and the password is password. This is the default for most Netgear routers.

If you have Linksys then most likely the default username is admin with no password(just leave it blank and hit ok). If this does not work you need to search the internet for default login for the model of your router(this should be written on the bottom)

Hopefully this will work and you will be logged in, if it doesn't then you may have to call Geeksquad.
Once you are logged in look around for an area called wireless security and your encryption key should be somewhere near there. I cannot tell you exactly where it is because the different models have different home pages. Enter the key you get through this method into your wireless program on your computer and you should have internet.

Did you put the router in yourself? If you or the geeksquad installed it, they probably left it with a default password. If not, Google default password with the model number of your wireless device. Once you have it, click on start, then run. From the window that appears, type CMD. Hit enter. it will bring open a bigger window. In that window type IPCONFIG.
It will have a couple of lines, look for the one that says default gateway. It should be something like 192.168.1.1 Open a web browser and put that number in the web browser. It should open the web interface of the wireless device. From in there you can find the encrypted key.

Is it actually a Geek squad brand router? If you can log into the router, you should be able to find the encryption key. Whoever the manufacturer of the router is, you can call them to see if they would know the username and password to log into the router. Usually you can log into these type of routers by typing in the default gateway address into the web browser (in the same area that you type www.yahoo.com to get to the Yahoo website, for example). If you have Windows XP, try clicking on the start button, run, and type in 'cmd' and press enter. In the black screen, type in 'ipconfig' and it'll show what your 'default gateway' is.

$70 to find an encryption key is a total ripoff.

i agree with Kyle. but the easiest way to find out the gateway to get to your router (whatever brand it is) is to click start->run->type cmd->press Enter-> and on the black command prompt screen type ipconfig. get the default gateway from the information that it gave you, type that set of numbers on your address bar and click go. you can look up every default router password from this link http://www.phenoelit.de/dpl/dpl.html. The information would be on the Wireless Tab :D

Log in to the router's administration website, and set a clean key... a similar way you probably did once you placed it up interior the 1st place. it is to be was hoping which you probably did no longer forget approximately the password for that... Failing that, reset the router to its production unit default configuration (Small hollow, paperclip...:-) and initiate over. all the above assumes that it is your router, and which you have admin get entry to to it,
