Brand new sata drive, my computer shows that sata connections 1, 2, 3, and 4 are empty when one of them is not. Anybody know why?

My best guess is you hooked it up wrong.

Open BIOS menu. Go to integrated peripherals. Usually at the bottom portion there is something there to enable/disable the SATA controller.
This also happened to me on a Foxconn motherboard.

Go to your Bios setting and make sure the Sata Settings are turned on. some motherboards require you to turn on the sata settings

Happened to me on my MSI. You'll also need to Partion it after enabled in Bios
