lets look at the first statement. 8 men take 12 days to repair a 4km road.
Therefore 8 men would take 12/4 = 3 days per km.

6 men would then take (8*3)/6 = 4 days per km.

Ans: 4 days

The repair rate per man-day is:

length / (men * days) =
4km/(8*12) =
1/24 km per man per day.

Now, if we have 6 men, and 1km to repair, use the same equation, and the rate computed above, to solve for the number of days:

1/24 = length / (men * days)
1/24 = 1 / (6 * d)
d/24 = 1/6
d = 4

So it will take 4 days for 6 men to repair 1km of road.
