The proper grammar for the question is "May I".
"Can I" implies Do I have the physical ability to ....Am I able to...?
May I is inquiring whether it is permissible. It is framed properly as a question that requires a yes or no answer.

"Can" is asking if you are capable of doing something. "May" is the way of asking politely.
