Treading water - you are in an upright position (usually in deeper water- or you will have to raise your feet above bottom) use your feet like flippers to push your body up and keep you from sinking, or you can do similar to riding a bicycle motion. In the meantime wave your hands just below the surface of the water back and forth making a slight "S" pattern as you go pushing the water down. This will keep your head above water, you will be in one spot. You will in fact be treading water!
On land tread would mean to travel, you can walk,hike or if you go 4x4 you can hear the term "Tread Lightly" (means travel slowly do not damage the area travelled)

What I was taught when I swam was to "eggbeater." You move both of your legs around in circles, but not together so that they do not hit each other. While your eggs are spinning move your arms back and forth across the surface with your hands vertical.
Most of the power comes from your legs though.

its where you keep yourself from sinking by doing a circular motion with your feet and hands. You are only treading water if you are not pushing or pulling yourself away from your original point (that would be swimming). So, you're staying in the same spot and you are keeping yourself afloat.
you do it by using your feet and hands like fins, but instead of using them to pull or push you in a certain direction, you are circling them so that you don't move.

It's staying afloat using your arms and legs to keep your head (and perhaps your upper arms) out of the water. Usually, one would scull with one's arms, but the leg kick would be a matter of choice. I use breast stroke leg kicks as I get more power from them.

you can eggbeater. this is what we do in water polo, you move your right leg counter clock wise, and your left leg clockwise. you want to have your legs far apart, like your sitting in a chair and you want your knees ti be bent like your sitting in a short chair with the back rest in the front so your legs are spread out.

pretty much all it is, is moving your arms back and forth. you can also kick a little bit. it is all vertical
