Both Houston and Los Angeles have a huge number of belly dance teachers. It won't be a question of where to find a teacher, but rather of which teacher to choose!

Here is a list of some of the teachers in Houston: http://www.shira.net/dir-us-t.htm#Houston

And here is a list of some of the teachers in the Los Angeles & Orange County area: http://www.shira.net/dir-us-ca-socal.htm#LA

Here are a couple of suggestions to help you find a good teacher:

* Although most belly dance students choose their teacher according to whose classes are cheapest, at the most convenient time/day, or at the closest location, these are actually all poor ways to choose a teacher. You should be choosing according to qualifications.

* Contact teachers that you are considering before you go to your first class, and ask them questions about their qualifications, what their classroom structure is, etc.

* Here are some questions to ask prospective teachers:
- How long have you been belly dancing? (Beware of teachers who say less than 5 years.)
- How many years did you take belly dance classes before you started to teach? (Again beware of people who say less than 5 years.)
- What kind of continuing education have you pursued to ensure your knowledge is current and you don't stagnate? (Teachers should be taking at least 2-3 workshops per year)
- Why should I choose YOU instead of one of the other dancers in town? (Beware of people who answer this by saying insulting things about the other teachers because they probably cultivate a catty, backbiting attitude toward other dancers in town; instead, look for people whose responses focus on their own personal strengths.)

I hope this helps!
