Let e = Edmonton's June rainfall, and v be Victoria's.

You have two equations in e and v:

e + v = 107 ("total rainfall is 107")
e = v + 53 ("Edm. 53 more than Vic.")

Plug the second into the first, by substituting v+53 for e:

e + v = 107
(v+53) + v = 107
2v = 54
v = 27 mm

Go back to either original equation and plug in that value, to get e:

e = v + 53
e = 27 + 53
e = 80 mm

And there you have the answer, Edmonton has 80mm and Victoria 27.

You can check to ensure that the total matches up:

e + v =? 107
80 + 27 =? 107
107 = 107

EASY!! are you asking of teaching us...
anyway...
x + (x+53)=107
2x=107-53
x=27
107-27=80
which is 27 and 80
