It IS decoration. It's that something extra to put your best face forward. It compliments the natural beauty. It can make a statement about style, like showing a soft feminine side, or showing a tougher, grittier side. It balances the look of an outfit, bringing it right up and around the wearers whole body. The tinsel on the tree, the centerpiece on the table... what's the point? It looks so nice, so complete, so put together without being overstated. That is, if it's done right.

Current times I would say it is for fashion and also symbols of commitment.
Objects designed for the adornment of the body, usually made of gold, silver, or platinum, often with precious or semiprecious stones and such organic substances as pearls, coral, and amber.
Jewelry evolved from shells, animal teeth, and other objects used as adornment in prehistoric times. Over the centuries it came to be a sign of social or religious rank.
In Renaissance Italy, jewelry making reached the status of a fine art; many Italian sculptors trained as goldsmiths. From the 17th century the decorative function of jewelry again came to the fore, overshadowing its symbolic significance.
By the 19th century, industrialization brought jewelry within the reach of the middle class. Firms opened by jewelers such as Carl Fabergé and Louis Comfort Tiffany achieved great success by making fine jewelry for the wealthy.

It is a waste of money that when stolen unless you have a special insurance rider your are simply out of the money you spent. Yes its pretty and yes it compliments and yes its to show off and claim status. It is also vain and costly. If you are struggling to pay rent, mortgage, car payments, utilities, etc these shiny little things should be the last thing on your mind. If you want to invest buy land. and if you want to look pretty work on your inner self than jewelry will pale in comparison to your real beauty.

Most jewellry (especially costume jewellry) is purely for decoration.
Showing off could be part of it, but most people wear jewellry to complement their clothes or the look. Some jewellry has sentimental value or reminds the wearer of an event or place.
It can also be a wearable "investment" for the future.
And some cultures value gold, so the amount of gold jewellery indicates the status of the person or their family.

All of my jewelry has meaning to me except for my earrings. I have a promise ring, a yesterday today and tomorrow necklace, a bracelet for my birthday and one for graduation. I don't like wearing them all together all the time so I only wear the most important things all the time.

Girls like to feel pretty..and jewelry makes them feel more sophisticated. Yeah, it probably doesn't make sense to many men (unless they are gay...), however it is also a way of celebrating the body by adorning it with fine jewels. It's an old tradition.

For me, it completes an outfit. Now granted, it's costume jewely - nothing like from Tiffany's or whatever - but it's all about accessorizing.
It's add color, texture, shape, and style.
I love jewelry.
