I recently relocated from NY to Chicago and left my job in NY to do so. In the middle of moving, I found out that I had thyroid cancer and had to have surgery. We're in Chicago now I'm eager to start a job search, but my doctor has advised against it for another month or so because I have to have a treatment which prevents me from being around people for 14 days because I will have to swallow a radioactive iodine pill. I'm really running low on money because the surgery kept me out of work longer than planned, and I was wondering if I would be able to collect unemployment. I'm thinkin' no, but I thought I'd just double check. It would only be for about another six weeks.
I'm also fully aware that I voluntarily left my job in NY, so that's working against me. I was more curious about the medical aspect of it. Thanks in advance.

Call the unemployement office in your city in New York...they will have the most accurate answers for you...most likely no because you voluntarily quit and relocated before your medical condition became apparent...but they will know alot more than any of us.

If you got fired without just cause you may have an exception, but voluntarily leaving will exempt you from eligibility. Contact the unemployment office nearest your home for specific guidelines or your former HR office in case you still have some Cobra medical or short term disability coverage.
I would try to save money in the interim, write a great resume and cover letters, research a few companies and then contact an employment agency or job board in your field.
I am sorry to hear about your illness. Good luck!

depending on what state you're in, you could assemble depending on why you have been fired. in case you're fired with out being given warning and/or reason, you could assemble. you additionally can stop and assemble specially situations in spite of the shown fact that this is somewhat complicated. in many circumstances that is on condition that what you're advertising employer is going approximately issues illegally/illegitimately or you're in an risky or threatening atmosphere. This occurred to me and that's somewhat complicated to assemble because of the fact I had all the above and sweetness, they lied to get out of the situation. in spite of the shown fact that that is appealed. I have been given letters of reference from coworkers who have been keen to speak out or left the corporation, previous employers, character references, etc. I additionally had documentation of issues that occurred on the corporation. the only reason i did not pass with the aid of with the charm became that I had a family participants member engaged on an identical corporation who i became particular could be retaliated against (and became). looking on your reasoning for desiring to get out, call you employment protection/unemployment workplace and touch a senator.

You had a moving plan then quit your job and didn't try to get fired? WELL GOOD GOING STUPID. Jesus christ. You can't get unemployment because you voluntarily left your job among other reasons. Welcome to WELFARE kiddo. Who is this WE? Have that other half of We work harder. I hope you're not married because then Welfare will turn you down.

Maybe you should apply for disability (temporary), you have to be available for work when your on unemployment, so they would probably turn you down. But you should be eligible for disability with a Doctor's note.
