I have problems with the lawnmower-the engine sputters and emits excessive exhaust gases. I have changed the sparkplug and thoroughly cleaned the precleaner with detergent, then oiled it. However, the problems persist. Specifically, the engine makes unstable noises-it vibrates and makes a noise for 500mSec, then reduces the next half; this continues all of the time, but never turns off. I have also noticed that after just a few seconds of operation, the engine gets very hot.

check for water in the fuel bowl. then check for blockage in the air idle port. both of these symptoms will cause it to over work to run and increase temp.

On some mowers, the engine speed and other things are controlled by a fan-driven governor. The flywheel (at the top of the engine) has an integral fan which cools the engine and which blows on a little lever... the little lever regulates the speed of the engine. So your problems might be related to the flywheel fan. I might suggest you take off the plastic shroud over the engine, and clean out all the leaves, grass, debris, and make sure the fan and governor lever are OK.

Sounds like it has bad piston rings and not getting good compression. The main bearing is probably also shot. I bet no one ever changed the oil or its very old in either case buy a new mower.
