Because just as the African Americans wanted their freedoms that America is known for so do we. There are so many benifits we miss out on because the gov. won't legalize gay marriges.

Here are some of the legal rights that married couples have and gays and lesbians are denied:
1. Joint parental rights of children
2. Joint adoption
3. Status as "next-of-kin" for hospital visits and medical decisions
4. Right to make a decision about the disposal of loved ones remains
5. Immigration and residency for partners from other countries
6. Crime victims recovery benefits
7. Domestic violence protection orders
8. Judicial protections and immunity
9. Automatic inheritance in the absence of a will
10. Public safety officers death benefits
11. Spousal veterans benefits
12. Social Security
13. Medicare
14. Joint filing of tax returns
15. Wrongful death benefits for surviving partner and children
16. Bereavement or sick leave to care for partner or children
17. Child support
18. Joint Insurance Plans
19. Tax credits including: Child tax credit, Hope and lifetime learning credits
20. Deferred Compensation for pension and IRAs
21. Estate and gift tax benefits
22. Welfare and public assistance
23. Joint housing for elderly
24. Credit protection
25. Medical care for survivors and dependents of certain veterans
These are just a few of the 1400 state and federal benefits that gays and lesbians are denied by not being able to marry.

All we ask is to have what our constitution promises, freedom and rights as Americans to do what everyone else wants to do. Be ourselves!

I'd like the legal right to be at my Best Beloved's bedside (should anything untoward happen) in the Hospital. Right now, the hospital administration and her family can come in and block me --who has been with her for 26 going on 27 years -- from making any decisions regarding her care. They can forbid me from being at her funeral or at the gravesite.
This has happened to far too many of us in the Gay Community and it will continue to happen until we have the legal rights to be at our Partner's sides just as our Hetero Sisters and Brother's do. We have no rights to Death Benefits nor to Pensions.
This is why I want Gay and Lesbian marriage Legalized.

(I might add that this can also be avoided by getting Medical and legal powers of Attourney in Place, but wouldn't it be nice to not have to?)

Well, let's go over the arguments AGAINST legal gay/lesbian marriages.. Once again.

"Marriage is for children." - Given that attitude, infertile people, the elderly, disabled, and people who just plain don't want kids should also not be allowed to marry.

"Marriage is a sacred religious commitment." - No one's talking about having a religious wedding. You don't have to marry the gay couples in your church do you? We just want the rights and ability to do something that everyone else takes for granted. Oh and not all heterosexual marriages are "sacred" commitments. Vegas disproves that.

"It corrupts children!" - Oh and all the blatant in your face cigarette and beer commercials/ads, the porn, regularly accepted near TV nudity, swearing, and everything else that's done every day doesn't do so more? You can't find any valid proof that says gay people are harmful to children. In fact all legitimate studies so far have said the exact opposite.

Yeah and let's not forget the fact that most "first world" countries support and preach strong concepts of freedom and equality. Restricting people to get married over their sexuality does NOT promote freedom or equality.

What approximately womens and minorities perfect to vote? or perhaps segregation? None of those could have handed while placed to vote. this is a controversy of civil rights, marriage is a settlement, in case you do no longer enable specific people to pass into right into a settlement as a results of fact of a ethical or non secular reason, this is discrimination. Marriage should not be ruled via the state or any faith.

Because, NO WHERE in our LAWS does it say that Marriage is a RELIGIOUS ceremony. Therefore, Marriage should be about laws (equal) and not about God and the church. By making it about something its not, people are able to mislead and cloud the issue, putting off making laws. However, when its found out what the Laws ARE and where they stand, reasonable people have to accept that to GIVE EQUAL RIGHTS, then EVERYONE deserves the same shot at marriage, despite whether IT MAKES YOU PERSONALLY HAPPY OR NOT, its not about you, the straight person, its about the gay countryman you're denying marriage to because you don't like "who" he lives with, BASED ON THE RELIGIOUS BELIEF YOU HAVE. YET, YOU WOULD NOT TAKE THAT OFF A MUSLIM, HINDU OR ANY OTHER RELIGION, YOURSELF! Yet you EXPECT your countrymen to from you!

I don't think it should have to be "legalized!" When I got married, no gays showed up and protested my husband and I tying the knot, so it's none of my concern if they want to say vows and declare their love for each other before God. I don't think God would have ANY problem with two people loving each other. No problem at all. None.

well, from my side of the fence, love is love is love. no one can explain it, no one can condemn it, and if you love someone, why can't you marry them? why shouldn't you be allowed the security of marriage?

see, someone being gay doesn't make you gay. that's the same logic as, "hanging around tall people makes me taller." so if you don't like it, you don't have to marry someone of your same gender. that said, i don't think it gives anyone a right to decide who you have to love, gay, straight, bi, or transgender. i think by virtue of freedom of choice and expression, anyone should be free to marry whomever they choose.

Because marraige is about love. And two people who are in love should be able to get married no matter what their gender.
