A political and societal necessity; it’s the degree of censorship that becomes controversial. It cannot be understood in black and white.

In a perfect world....an Utopia
no one would ever hate, curse or believe in anarchy
and the word for censorship would not exist

I don't live there and neither do you.

Censorship is to prevent publishing, viewing, or speaking of something which may be offensive, politically inappropriate, racist or have other perceived negative connotation.

Books have been burned, spoken dialog has been "bleeped" on television and radio, authors banned, careers ruined, all in the name of censorship. Catcher in the Rye is one example of a banned book, innocent by today's standards, it caused a scandal when published.

Society helps determine what may be censored. Some believe in the freedom of speech without censorship. This is great only in Utopia. In the real world, offensive speech would annoy, anger, or frighten the audience whether written or spoken, so censorship has its purpose.

Censorship is when the government arrests people whenever they say or write a certain thing. For example, in China they arrest anyone who mentions that they massacred a bunch of their own citizens during a pro-Democracy demonstration in Tiananmen Square a few years ago.

Sometimes a news network will cancel a TV show because they don't like what it said (like when Don Imus called some girls nappy headed hoe). Some people say that's censorship, but it's not. Don Imus can still say whatever he wants, and he won't be arrested. MSNBC just won't help him say it. And there's nothing wrong with that. They don't have to help him say things that they don't support.

Basically, censorship is the process by which an entity (company, government, religious institution, society, or even ones' self) does not permit the free expression of a thought. A government might strike sensitive information out of a letter written by a soldier to home, if this information might prejudice the military effort. You might censor yourself, if you had some feelings you wanted to express, but were unwilling to do so for reasons such as fear of reprisal, or hurting someone.

There are those, including myself, that believe in the free expression of thoughts and opinions (except, of course, "Yelling 'Fire!' in a crowded theater for no reason"). Censorship is based on someone's opinion that his/her ideas or what is correct or proper is better than anyone else's. I believe this decision should be left to the individual.

Censorship is basically preventing speech from being spoken.

Generally a prior restraint- stopping speak before spoken- is unconstitutional unless the government can show a compelling need to prevent the speech and that there is no less intrusive means of reaching its goals.

Anytime someone is punished for an expression or that expression is prevented before spoken it is considered censorship....some is necessary and others are arbitrary

Censorship is removing words and images from different forms of media (TV, radio, internet, news) because they may be deemed offensive to someone.

Well, newsflash: everything is offensive to SOMEONE. This is why we have warnings up, like "warning: the stuff you are about to read may offend you"

Then we have people blame the content they willfully exposed themselves to for corrupting them. Noone takes responsibility for thier own actions. Then they sue the companies that made the content, and everyone gets screwed over.

I'm against censorship. If you dont want to see offensive material, then dont. Dont go to that website, dont watch that channel, DONT take away something lots of people enjoy just because you didnt like it.
