Depends whether you want a classic or a modern bike.
Old BMW's are generally the R series (Airheads or Boxers) and the K series (Flying Brick) Both types are most certainly wanted and have a huge following. I have an ex Police R80 and it is tough, reliable and easy to work on. Its the Bee's knees on a long trip and is cheap to own. Owning an old Triumph would involve much higher maintenance and I can't find a good one cheap enough anyway.
Lot's of choice in the newer models. Again, it depends. Do you want to compare a sporty bike like the Triumph Daytona with the BMW R1100S or the Triumph Tiger With a Funduro. It really depends what you want to do with it. I can say that I like the Triumph Tiger and I think it would make a good adventure bike. But if I want to go RTW then I would like the bigger BMW 1100GS.
In a nutshell, BMW and Triumph have both produced some great bikes. Not one is better than the other. You got to really know what you want or need the bike to do for you before you could make the choice. It may just be down to cash in the end.

I say go with the Triumph. I owned a 2000 sprint rs and put 30,000 miles on it with no problems. Also, I used to work at a BMW and Triumph dealer. I was the warranty writer. We wrote way more warranties for much more serious problems for BMW's. It seemed that some BMW owners got great bikes with no issues and others seemed to have problems left and right. While the Triumphs were basically built solid. The BMW isn't going to do anything better than the Triumph. The only thing it's going to do is outlast the Triumph, should you try and put over a hundred thousand miles on it(which most people never do) The triumph will be lighter and handle better than most beemers and the power delivery on the triple motor is OUTSTANDING. Having spent plenty of time on both brands, and all models I would never choose BMW over Triumph.

I own three old Harleys and a 2006 Triumph America I bought new. The triumph is the best overall bike I have ever ridden. Over 45 years of riding, I've owned about everything out there.

Triumphs are built great - they can easily log 60k to 100k miles with little trouble if well maintained. MCN did a customer satisfaction survey on the Triumphs a couple of years ago, and they came out with the best score ever for the mag.

BMWs are great bikes, and they also rank highly on MCN. They actually have a fairly high frequency of repair record. Since they are both Euro bikes, maintenance and parts are generally not cheap for either.

I'd say go with the one you like the best in terms of looks, handling and comfort.

If it were between the two I would probably choose a triumph as I think they have more character and are a lot more fun. Always found the flat twins on the Beemers pretty dull. Im sure they are great to ride long distance and ultra reliable but they dont stir my soul.

I really depends on what you want the bike for. Personally, I've always liked the Triumphs better. I have one now and can't wait to get another.
