It's not a good idea to keep squirrels as pets. I've known people who have and they were not positive experiences. The most positive one that there was ended tragically- the squirrel got used to the family dog so he thought all dogs were nice to squirrels. One day he casually approached another dog and the dog killed him on the spot.

Other experiences involve problems taming them.

I had a pet squirrel years ago, his name was Sammy and he was adorable. He use to sunbath on the porch and even the mail carrier use to pet him, but when he got a little older he saw a female squirrel and took off up a tree. I was told then that it was illegal to kept a squirrel or any other wild animal in the State of Michigan (where I live) but I've never actually asked. I think I'd call the local SPCA and ask them.

Squirrels make lousy pets. They are very high energy and need huge areas to run and climb. They chew everything and they poop and pee everywhere. They get very nasty and bite at breeding age. They are truly wild animals and should be free. Get a sugar glider instead.
