When doing a tie die object you first have to be sure what you are dying will take the color. Anything that is 100% Cotton would do.
Then you need either a few different but complimentary dyes, or varying strengths of the same dye.
Firstly wash the object you want to dye. This removes the preservitive from the fabric, and opens it up for the die.
Do you want white for the first (lightest) color - assuming what you are dying is white? Then tie tightly with either strong elastic bands, or several rounds of strong thread, where you want it to start. Then place in the lightest of the dye baths, for the recommended time.
For the second and third dying, just rinse the object with water (using plastic gloves or your hands will dye too) without untying, place on more bands/string and place in the next deepest colour. Each "ring" will remain the color before it.
When this has been repeated and you have used each of the dyes, rinse again. Use a dye fixative if you have one, or wash the object in salty water to help fix the color. Then untie and dry fully.
Voila, you will have your own tie dyed object!

Tie dye shorts are cool so are Tees .
One must always make sure that the material you are going to dye is always 100% coton if not you will not get the full effect of the dye. Wash item before dieing. USE rubber bands for tieing some people use fabric base ties ,,but the die may penetrate.
Tie dying can be fun and good therapy always make sure to wear old clothes because it can be very messy and wear gloves so your hands don't get colored , regular latex will do .Stay away from grease and oliy substances / surfaces when dying and make sure you have clean running water at hand and most important READ directions . When you are finished dying rinse the item in a SALT WATER solution this prevents the dye from running, you may have to do this a couple times until there is no bleeding of the item.
Always wash seperately to avoid dye from running.
Hope this was help full.
Have you tought of tie dyed bed room curtains and bed sheets ?
