You seem to be asking about drag races in cars.

There are several important factors in a drag race. Here they are in approximate order of importance. 1 = most important.

1. Tires. You want tires that are as sticky as possible. If your tires are squealing and making smoke, you are not getting good acceleration. Sticky tires means you can launch with more power without spinning the tires.

2. Launch. A good launch means you are applying just enough power to get the most acceleration without spinning the tires too much. The launch is the most important part of the drag race, since any poor acceleration at the beginning is multiplied by the amount of time yet to go. The end of the race is the least important part to getting a good time.

3. Power. After the beginning of the race, most cars won't have enough torque to spin their tires. This means the car's acceleration is torque-limited (or power-limited, if you prefer). The car with more power will have better acceleration in the middle and end part of the race.

4. Weight. A lighter car will accelerate faster.

5. Weight transfer to or from the drive wheels. When you accelerate forward, weight is transferred off the front wheels, onto the rear wheels. The more weight a tire has on it, the better it grips, so ideally you'd want 100% of the weight on the driving wheels. This is why rear-wheel drive is better for drag racing.

6. Aerodynamics. For 1/4-mile races with relatively slow cars (street cars), this is not important. For cars with 900 horespower, this is somewhat more important.
