Ode To Poe

Dark, decrepit, dreary damned night
Fills my bowels with stones of fright
My eyes shift from the left to the right
While shadows dance in the pale moonlight

No human should walk the earth at this hour
Per chance to meet some unearthly power
I watch, I listen, I dodge, I cower
While heart burns, stomach churns, and mouth tastes sour

The cold wind howls with evil glee
Anticipating my destiny
I know some spectre waits for me
To rend, to end mortality

I watch it standing up ahead
With fingers of bone and eyes of red
Beckoning me to join the dead
I change my path, with feet of lead

I begin to tremble and I can swear
If only in mind, there's something here
And I die in waiting, there's death in fear
Damned night be gone, glorious dawn appear

great poem, i like the rhyme scheme...good flow.....clear and concise.........It reminds me of an excerpt from Edgar Allan Poe's, "The Raven":

"And the raven, never flitting, still is sitting, still is sitting
On the pallid bust of Pallas just above my chamber door;
And his eyes have all the seeming of a demon's that is dreaming,
And the lamp-light o'er him streaming throws his shadow on the floor;
And my soul from out that shadow that lies floating on the floor
Shall be lifted - nevermore!" (poe)

It really is a great poem. If you've never read the whole thing I highly recommend it, and any number of Poe's other works. I like to look at it as an extended metaphor for those things in life that cast a shadow across our own subjective existences. Whether it be loss, the loss of dreams, loved ones, lovers, or money, or if it's doubt, or guilt, or fear, or pain, or regret, or sin, there is universally something. There are few who can say they don't have their own personal shadows cast on the floor, their own private ravens rapping at their door. (or spectre's blocking their way) I think Poe, lost in the darkness that made much of his writing so great, forgot one thing: If you find yourself in a shadow.....and something's blocking your light....all you have to do is move a little to the left....or to the right.

It is merely the intractable nature of our own perspectives that leaves us sitting alone in shadows and running from the night.
