Well the way up is signifcantly more difficult to achieve... but the way down is more emotionally difficult to deal with... but the toughest of all is to start from as far down possible and making your way up... because you are born into that emotionally difficult situation and then working your way up provides many difficult challenges.

The way up can be challenging... it requires strength, focus, goals... the way down can be painful (free fall through certain obstacles and you'll have several bumps and bruises), but the landing... man, the landing can be the killer.

I'd think the way down would be more difficult if the descent was caused by poor choices. But sometimes the way down is a cake walk... we've simply chosen a different summit.

Am I making sense? I can't see... the sunset has claimed my attention from my tenuous hold on this rock wall.

Which is more difficult, the way up, or the way down, do you mean, when you are starting to make your own decisions as you grow older, and when you are older, does the ladder, as they say get more difficult to climb. It depends on every individual, some of us can make decisions as we are growing up, faster than others, and also, the way down, is no problem at all for others too. I hope this might be an answer to your question.

Life is an upward spiral. With it comes great joy and great disappointment. It is only in how we chose to handle both that determines the final course at play. For those that find life or the way up much easier, find sometimes that the way down is full of rocks, sharp objects and even more disappointments than anyone can imagine. But the sweetness of having traveled the long difficult journey up, is the slide down!...All of our lives are ebb and flow, it is upeach one of us to take the "milestones" and build on them or not.

Both present their own challenges.

The way up is fraught with challenges as everyone wants to get there. You either have to push others down to get there or find another route that nobody else has taken and be the first to step into the unknown.

The way down is a freefall. The farther you go, the worse the impact, the more the injury. The worst part is it's usually unexpected and you can't stop it. All you can do is just careen down the precipice until you hit the floor.

For those who drive themselves, the way down is the hardest for them to handle.
For those who condemn themselves, the way up is not worth the candle.

Ah, it's called the journey of Life.

To be on top of that mountain called Success you must climb. Along the way you will need to find your own handholds and footholds of Decision, so you might inch yourself up higher. You might need to traverse wide ravines of Uncertainty, abseil between two precarious edges of Risk and rappel across the walls of Doubt.

Sometimes you take unexpected tumbles caused by loose rocks of Bad Luck. Sometimes you might need to rappel down a little ways to set out again on firmer and better Alternative Routes. But to reach that destined peak of Glory, we must take them all in our stride. And no one ever said that this will be a half-day trip. A classic story of an Epic Journey might even take a lifetime.

But once you have reached the top, pause a little while and savor the moment. Wait for one sunrise or two. Because once you have succeeded in reaching that coveted Olympus, there is no other way further but down.

Sometimes the journey down is easier; content and buoyed with the memory of achieved glory, for those looking forward to take the fun slide down and spend the rest of his lifetime in peaceful retirement.

And sadly there are some too that were pushed unexpectedly off the edge by the winds of Fate and found themselves in a terrifying, vertical Drop. A smart one would have a parachute prepared, just in case. Or even a lifeline pegged somewhere on the way up. But for those woefully unprepared could only hope to slip into oblivious unconsciousness before the final, fatal crash….

(I’m sorry, feeling in a bit of a rambling mood here. Just couldn’t keep it short)

This may not be a very good analogy, but I once climbed St. Domonic's steeple--just old rotted slats nailed to the wall. It wasn't easy, but going back down was much worse. So, I wonder, if there is an "ulitimate" top, when we reach it, is there any place else to go but back down--that is, where we came from, but a bit stronger & wiser? Or, could we find that the top wasn't all we'd expected after all?
In my case, this wasn't just for fun. The door had "Do Not Enter" on it, so of course I did. I'd been having many dreams of climbing ladders, hanging on to ropes, working my way up through labyrinths, & they were messages about something within myself that I needed to prove. It was symbolic. The friend who was with me, strongly discouraged me, but he knew it ws something I had to do. I remember looking down & his face was absolutely ashen. I HAD to go up, & come back down if I died in the attempt. It was a wonderful feeling. Somehow, the door had locked behind us, & there were rats all scuttling around. (I was so high, I'd loved to have stayed there all night!) But my friend beat on the door, & two priests appeared. I'll never forget them. Both had their hands folded before them, one very tall & grey, the other cherubic. My friend came up with some fantastic story, discreetly put a wad of bills into the older priest's hands, & we lit candles, & then went out into a star filled night. That was 15 years ago, & seems so close. The one thing I wonder from your question is, (in general), why do we go up, & why do we come down? Why aren't we content where we are?

After looking at some of the answers, I feel I either didn't adequately understand it, or put too much into it. Oh well.

enki, you are scrambling my little grey cells. If you work your way all the way up, what would happen to require you to go back down? Unless you found that the "up" you wanted wasn't really what you wanted. Would you still have to go all the way back down & start over? Could you sort of look around at the top & find alternatives? If "someone" pushed you, that would be different, & hopefully you'd fall on something soft. Not sure what you mean.

The way up is difficult, figuring out how to do it, not knowing if you will reach your goals, the way down is disheartening because you're come accustomed to things, but you also have an idea how to get back there.

The way up can seem hopeless, to the point of giving up. And not knowing how to suceed. The way down is depressing because of what you've lost, but you come out of it more knowledgable.

The way up is more difficult. The way down is simply what you make it. It happens easily enough, but you can make it hard for yourself by feeling you're losing something esential, and worrying about it. Let go, and it's a holiday, however restricted.
