It's a scam sweetie

in a few days you will get a call from a foreign gentleman asking if you received the check, and after surprise that it came in your name - will ask you to cash it for him and send him a bankwire or money order for the amount of the check less a fee to thank you for your assistance.

You do it - and then a week later - it bounces and you are out the money and no longer able to reach the foreign gentleman

When he calls - tell him you turned the check over to the FBI and hang up

Look carefully at the envelope - is it really hand-written? Or is it a script font designed to look like it was hand-written?

Then look VERY carefully at the check. Is it hand-written, and is there any fine print on it - front and back? By cashing it, you might end up enrolling yourself in some sort of expensive program that you don't really need. Some companies suck people in that way, charging them $20 per month to do some meaningless thing for them, and deducting it as a fee from their bank account every month. They get it by putting fine print that authorizes this when the person endorses the check.

You could try contacting the Better Business Bureau in your state or the one listed on the check, and see if there are any complaints against this company.

Have you tred to contact the company, and see what they have to say about it? There should be an address on the check.

Finally, if all else fails, just pitch the check. You'll be no further off than you are now if you do that.

You may have received an inheritance or settlement, but usually there is some paperwork with it. Make sure its not an application for a line of credit. If it looks like a check otherwise, cash it. Unsolicited money received through the mail is the property of the receipient.
Brown & Shipley are a reputable private bank in the UK. You can call them I guess.

It's a come on, don't cash it! Take it to your bank and have them investigate it. It could be someone trying to copy that banks checks. Keep the envelop it came it, the FBI may want to see it.
