You would have to get a different operating system if you wanted good protection. Linux is in the main unaffected by it.

The problem with Spybot and Adaware is that they are run on an ad hoc basis so if you forget to run them then you could be infected for a number of days before spyware is eventually detected.

Windows Defender is loaded in to memory at boot time and it runs scheduled scans and it updates itself automatically. On the other hand it does use up resources when it is performing those actions.

microsoft has a free download of windows defender.i choose this program, because I figured who should know more than them.I think Kaspersky might have a free download.I checked out kasperky, they're pretty good.the only problem is,when it comes to getting a free anti virus scan, you may have a window open up saying the scan can't be done due to a liscensing problem.I'd recommend either one,but I'd say kaspersky is probably your best bet.You can also use yahoo anti spy, which is also free, and is pretty good as well.

You try Spybot-Search and Destroy it is pretty good in destroying those nasty spywares and adwares. You can download it for free. You can also try Ad-aware 2007 freeware it is good in removing MRUs and Data Miners that are installed without your permission to get some really, really important data. After you've got these two installed in your system all you've got to do is run it, and then sitback and enjoy.
