Avoid VISTA like the plague until at least SP1 has come out.
I've had nothing but problems with it since I bought a new laptop

Vista is a great OS. If you want to, you can go ahead and get Vista. There really isn't a whole lot of bugs with it now. There are however, a few driver issues, but those can be solved fairly easy.

I am an impulive buyer, so I always buy too early and am extremley disappointed afterward. If I were you I would wait for a while understanding your need try to buy used and put the rest of the money aside until the price goes down, there is a promotion and they work out all of the kinks.

Windows keeps on releasing fixes and patches on their servers on a periodic basis. Waiting for all the bugs to get fixed and then buying it is pretty much same as constantly downloading patches (automatic updates) whenever available. The automatic updates are the most important ones that make your computer work better.
