You want to water it as early in the morning as possible. That way the leaves will dry before the sun rays have time to damage them. You dont want to water in the middle of the day because that is when the sun's rays are the most dangerous (it can actually burn your grass) and you dont want to water at night because you could cause mold. As far as how long and how often, that depends on how dry it is. Just remember, if it rains for 10 days straight, your grass is fine, so you cant really over water it. Also, it is better to do a few REALLY GOOD watering than a bunch of short ones. This promotes deep root growth that will make your grass the healthy green that you want. And one last side note, if you want the greenest grass on the block, spread an ample amount of lime dust all over your yard.

I heard on This Old House this week from the landscaping guy that you should water your lawn early in the morning--as early as possible. He suggested between 4:00-6:00 A.M. Not many people are awake that early, so water it as soon as you get up or set a timer.
I would water it maybe every other day for a 1/2 hour or until it gets a good soaking.
Hope this helps.

My mom has a system with a timer at her place, and the lawn folks said one of the good things about it was being able to water the lawn very early in the morning. It's now set to 4am. That way the water doesn't evaporate too much and the sun doesn't burn the leaves. I guess if you don't have a timer it may not be such a good time though, LOL!

Where I live in CA we are only allowed to water between 7pm and 11am 3 days a week for water conservation purposes. If you have no restrictions then water in the evening around dusk. This will give the water a chance to soak into the ground and your grass can recuperate from a long hot day. A friend of mine sets a timer that waters for 10 min. at 4am every morning. That works too.

So i believe in watering my lawn and flowers at dusk.....or around 7pm when the sun is weak so evaporation wont set in as quick
it's also cooler out at that time so it will be comftorable being outdoors and after a long sunny california day the grass and plants will just soak up all that water.......everything gets a nice long drink.....if you do have plants though becareful not to drown them

To prevent frying your garden it would be best to water it at least twice a day. Preferrably early in the morning and evening. This allows the water to penetrate the ground go into the plants roots within a normal temperature range without doing any damage. If you were to water the plants at noon the water will penetrate the ground and go into the plants roots at a much higher temperature range, thereby, frying the plant. Hope this helps.

Water early in the morning. Your lawn will require at least one inch of water a week, and it's better to water for a long time rather than in short spurts. Watering at night can cause fungus.

Early morning......say before 10 and then at night after 6 or 7. In other words, when it is cool. Up to 70% of water applied in mid day in an arid condition in summer will evaporate before it hits the ground. Water you paid for but didn't reach the ground.

The BEST times are from 6am-10am and 4pm-7pm. I would recommend watering in the evening time, so as the water will not evaporate on you as the day heats up. Prefferably around 4pm. You should water the lawn so as it receives at least 3/4" of water. Moisture sensors are available for sprinkler systems, but I found that watering fro about an hour provides a sufficient supply.
