Ambassador's Memo Asks for 'Best People'
Washington Post Staff Writer
Tuesday, June 19, 2007; A01
Ryan C. Crocker, the new U.S. ambassador to Iraq, bluntly told Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice in a cable dated May 31 that the embassy in Baghdad -- the largest and most expensive U.S. embassy -- lacks enough well-qualified staff members and that its security rules are too restrictive for Foreign Service officers to do their jobs.

"Simply put, we cannot do the nation's most important work if we do not have the Department's best people," Crocker said in the memo.

The unclassified cable underscores the State Department's struggle to find its role in the turmoil in Iraq. With a 2007 budget of more than $1 billion and a staff that has expanded to more than 1,000 Americans and 4,000 third-country nationals, the embassy has become the center of a bureaucratic battle between Crocker, who wants to strengthen the staff, and some members of Congress.

I think it's incredible that America built it's most expensive Embassy in a Nation that it invaded on Lies surrounded by People who want them out and will fight forever if they have to.

America destroyed the Nation of Iraq, there is shortages of electricity,Gasoline, millions of people are leaving the country, suicide bombings are out of control and I'm sure a Dumb Gung Ho Solider will answer this with a typical "Have you been there? You don't know what's been rebuilt? The Media doesn't tell the whole truth,They Love us over there,we rebuilt a Lot"---Well G.I.Joke you didn't rebuild enough, and don't blame the messenger for the mess in Iraq, blame your Evil President instead.

I agree with them that they need the best qualified people, because this embassy will not be ONLY an embassy but rather the HQ of USA agencies like CIA, FBI, etc in Middle East.
