Depends on your needs: how much arch support, wide or narrow feet, weight, underpronator (high arches - doesn't roll as much as it should) or overpronator (flat feet - rolls too far outward)?

Generally, Nike shoes tend to run narrow. New Balance offers a broad range of sizes & widths. Brooks offers excellent support. There are other good brands but these are the ones I am most familiar with.

Underpronators need more cushioning while overpronators need more motion control/stability & arch support.

Thor-lo socks are the best in terms of fit & breathability.

Check out local sports shoe stores that specialize in evaluating your needs & fitting shoes. Such stores often are independent stores & cater to avid runners or walkers. Don't rely on big chains or sporting goods stores. For details - http://walking.about.com/cs/powerwalking/a/blfastshoes.htm

Go to a reputable shoe store & ask the shoe salesperson to let you try on a walking shoe, like a New Balance. I have a pair & they make my feet feel so good. My ortho doctor recommended the New Balance for me & many of his patients. There are many other great walking shoes out there but try on a pair of New Balance first, You won't be disappointed. I bought mine at Penneys & when they were on sale, ($39.95) The New Balance wear like iron.
