I have 3 Red Eared Slider turtles and I've had them for a few years now, and everytime I go into the room I see them clawing at the glass like if they do it more, they'll be able to get through.

Then when it comes to feeding time they go crazy and when I put the food in the top (and even though they watch me do this) they don't notice that the food is in the water (even when it HITS their heads) and they keep slapping the water (their way of begging for food).

So everytime I feed them I have to leave the room afterwards so they can stop looking at ME and see that the food is in the water.

Since I have been feeding them everyday this way for years, shouldn't they be smart enough to notice this? Are my turtles just especially dumb or are all RES this way?

I don't feed my turtles "ceap" or "fake" food...they are regular turtle sticks, but that is not my question..They eat the food and they do know that it is food, they just dont notice when the food is in their tank.
As for the tank size, they aren't in a small tank but they aren't in a big tank either.

1. RES, like many other animals, are badly stressed by glass walls- they cannot understand the idea of a invisible force field. That does not make them stupid.

2. If they are not recognizing the stuff you are putting in as food, that is probably because it is not. Flakes and cheapo pellets are not really turtle foods.

3. Turtles digging in a corner are usually being kept in too small of a tank.
