If it is metal on metal while starting, it would be the starter. If it's when the engine is running, it is either your oil, or one of the pulleys. Before you do anything, check the oil level, that will also shut the engine off, it will have a oil pressure switch to the fuel pump. Best to check all your fluids while you are at it, many run off of pulleys. If your fluids are OK, check with the engine at idle that the oil pressure is coming up, either the idiot light is turning off after 2 or 3 seconds, or the guage is coming up. Don't race the engine untill you are sure that it has pressure. If that is all ok, you may drive it to a repair shop carefully, but it will probably be the alternator bearing went out, and I've seen them anywhere from $100 to $400 to replace the alternator, depending on your car.

Metal on metal is a starter problem. Also you should change the battery if it is over 5 years old. Good to go.

Jill, There is so much more info you should include, ie; make and model, mileage, # of cylinders. It coulde be anything from a timing belt to a fuel ,and if your luck is good maybe just a fuel filter. Add the additional info so you can get better info.

Have you checked the battery, take it to auto zone, and they can test it for free. If not the battery, take it to your dealership to see if any off the parts are covered under warrenty.
