Joe J's question was how he could be the best with his pitches, and i told him to follow though and not try to be perfect, and my problem is that i think im doing everything i can but the pitch is still wide of the strike zone.

A proper split finger is tough to master and will take time. It is not something that will came overnight. Make sure you utilize practice time to throw this pitch. When you are warming up in the outfield prior to practice, don't just throw 4 seam fastballs. Throw all of your pitches to develop a feel for them. The more you do this, the more you will feel comfortable throwing it in your bullpen sessions and in the games. A couple of tips to throwing the splitter is 1)do not lead with your elbow, 2)throw it with the same arm speed as your fastball 3) make sure your hand stays behind and your fingers on top of the ball. Throw it with your palm going directly toward the target. Here is a question to ask yourself...are your hands/fingers big enough to throw this pitch? People with small hands generally have a tougher time throwing this pitch.

Stop throwing the pitch. Master the two you have and if you can't get batters out come back and revisit the split finger. Too many young people think they have to throw every pitch known to mankind to be effective, and you don't. Plan your game around your strong points and you should be fine. Orton, how can you answer the Joe J. question when you can't answer your own?

split finger fastballs work best for pitchers whose pitches are losing stuff because of their age. You should focus more on develpoing a change up before you start messing with split finger fastballs

Well for one, a splitter isnt supposed to end up a strike. Try to throw it a little faster, cause you'll get a lot of guys swinging at it if they think it's a fastball and then it just drops right out of the strikezone.
