I have a 1998 f-150 pick-up with a 4.2 liter v 6. It's always had a very slow water leak a quart a month or so. Recently it got low enough for the heater to blow cold air and the temp gauge to almost peg. It was in the red, I was on the freeway 1 mile from exit so I continued with heater on high Gauge went down until I stopped at the exit then went back up. I slowly added water and went along my way. Within 2 weeks I started hearing a definite knock. Checked dipstick no water on it. There was some condensation on the inside of the oil fill cap. Cleaned it off and it returned within a few days. Not bad but condensation none the less. I'm wondering if I may have blown a head gasket. Engine has 145,000 and has always been very strong.(for a 6) It's paid for and I can afford whatever it takes to fix it. So if you have had the same or similar experience I would appreciate hearing about it and the outcome. Thanks Steve

If moisture on the dipstick sounds like a possible head gasket, and possibly warped head. Start the engine and see if the knock is coming from the water pump possibility exist that it could just be that, more of a clicking than a knocking though
