I am giving a talk on computer network security and am looking for applicable quotes. I would like a historical perspective on this particular quote, if only to verify that General Macarthur really did say this. I know who he was, and I know when he lived, but that seems to be all that the popular quote searches can give me.

I found it. He is quoted as having said it in a book, written by Courtney Whitney in a biography called, "Macarthur: His Rendezvous with History" in 1955. I still don't know the occasion at which he said it. Anybody have any idea?

I appreciate all the answers, everyone! His speech at West Point (dubbed, "Duty, Honor, Country") was made in 1962, so it was after the book quoting him was published; so it can't be that one.

His "Old Soldiers Never die" speech was his resignation speech before Congress in April, 1951. I found the original typed speech on the Library of Congress site (here: http://www.loc.gov/exhibits/treasures/trm048.html), and (sadly) the quote is nowhere to be found in it. Anybody else have any ideas? Thanks again!

The URL I gave above links to the wrong space, because they included my ), at the end. Here is the URL I meant to include:

i'm thinking it was during the korean war when he was replaced for wanting to use nuclear weapons, the most famous quote from that speech was when he said "old soldiers never die they just fade away" i'm not certain though

I find the quote all over the Internet, even on some university websites (not all of them business schools!), but without any source or date. Wikiquote doesn't mention it, not even under "Unsourced". You'll have to say "generally attributed to Douglas Macarthur", I'm afraid. :-)

I THINK he said it at the Commencement Address he gave at the U.S. Military Academy - same time and place he said "...old soldiers never die - they just fade away."
