Verizon and Sprint PCS have the best service for cell phone providers in the area. Cingular is good in Boston proper, but will drop calls in the suburbs, especially as you get further west. T-Mobile is great because its the only provider that offers service in the subway, but its service is by far the spottiest outside the city. If you want reliable service in Boston and throughout Mass and New England your best bets are Verizon and Sprint. Personally I've had Sprint as my provider since 2000, and have never once had an issue with them, their nationwide network is a bonus for me, and they start their free night minutes at 7pm. Both my parent's have had Verizon since 1998, and they never have any issues either. My sister has Cingular and hates it, her service is pretty spotty in certain areas. My co-worker has T-Mobile and has a lot of trouble with service. A few years ago, Boston.com did a survey of cell phone providers, scoring the plans by number of dropped calls. The rankings went as follows:
1. Verizon
2. Sprint
3. Cingular
4. Nextel
5. T-Mobile

Hope that helps!

Verizon is the best. I always have service and never drop calls. My friend has Cingular and as soon as her contract is up, she is leaving. She doesn't even get service at school right at BU! I don't know, a lot of people say it's good but she's had bad experiences. Plus, lots of people have Verizon, so then you can talk for free.

I have verizon and it works fantastically. never had a dropped call, never any problems whatsoever.

Do NOT get T-Mobile. I have had many friends get t-mobile and have terrible service throughout the city. All of them ended up switching to verizon or sprint (sprint is good too).

I don't know about cingular, though.

I've had both Cingular and Verizon. I say Verizon is the best - never have any dropped calls, etc., with them, but I have with Cingular.

T-Mobile would be my choice, i live in R.I and travel through Boston often. I have never had a problem in over 5 years. Someone talked me out of Verizon, and im glad they did! Good luck on your choice!

I think most of the carriers do well in Boston and Cambridge, but Verizon does well almost all across the state.
