Without friction we could not walk. We could not drive. We could not even pick up items in our hands.

We walk by the friction between our feet and the pavement allowing us to "push" against the pavement. You notice a lack of friction when you try to walk on an icy surface. That is when you realize how much you depend on friction to walk.

Tires must use friction to push against the pavement to move the car forward. Again you notice the benefits of friction when you try and drive on an icy road.

I never realized how much friction came into picking up items until I accidentally burned off my finger prints using HNO3 in a college lab. Once my fingers healed enough for me to touch things, I could not pick up a piece of paper. The finger prints were gone and the friction between my fingers and the paper was reduced. I had to crumple the paper in my hands to trap it so I could pick up the paper. I have been very careful with HNO3 since that time!
