try booting in safe mode and doing a scandisk or diskcheck then a defragment and clear all the junk files while there!

try going into safe mode. restart the pc and press escape, choose the safemode option and then do a system restore from there. that may help, if not and you still have the same error message it may be possible that you have damaged the boot sector on your hard drive, if this is true then it could mean you need a fresh install of windows.

Your hard drive's boot sector got messed up. If you are using Win XP and you have the installation disk, try to repair with this procedure:

After the repair, boot to safe mode then scan for virus, preferably twice w/ different anti-virus. Lots of freeware here:

Next time you connect to Internet make sure your firewall is on, you have anti-virus, anti-spyware and a registry guard like WinPatrol. Consider using Mozilla Firefox w/c blocks pop-ups.

The symptoms you describe point to a Mcdonalds'ed hard drive. It is burgered. Try cooling it down as near freezing as you can get it and try again this is only a temporary measure that may get it running enough to retrieve you files. I hope I am wrong.

Sounds like a virus that took out your boot section.
If you have your re installation disk - you might try to run the repair option. If that doesn't work - we are looking at total re installation.

Hear any clicking noises perchance? It sounds like it cannot read your hard drive...not a good thing at all. If that fails, and you don't have a backup, you could lose all your files.

You may have had a HDD crash, try starting it in "Safe Mode". If it doesn't start windows, you may need to replace the HDD. Before you do that try reinstalling your oS.

check if you have disk inserted that you have forgotten about... if not enter bios system and do system restore.... only for those who are fairly advanced, failing that take tower toy your local computer retailer rather than big stores, much cheaper!!
