BBT thermometers are more sensitive to the small fluctuations, but a regular one can be used too.

I've been charting for over a year with a normal thermometer and had no problems. They aren't quite as sensitive as a bbt thermometer, but you can still clearly see your ovulation pattern. Make sure your temp habits are consistent though, waking time etc. That way it will be more accurate. And always use the same thermometer. I recently bought a new one cause I thought I'd lost the old one, and it would always read 0.2 less than the old one (I found it and compared them). Make sure you note any changes to your sleeping patterns on your chart too. Good luck!!

You do need to use a special type of thermometer, which is able to record the slight changes in your temperature. You should be able to find these Basal thermometers in your local pharmacy. It is best if you take your BBT close to the same time every morning, and it has to be immediately after you wake. Make sure you have had at least three hours of uninterrupted sleep before you take your BBT.
Good luck

What you're talking about sounds like post O temps. Once you ovulate, your temps will go up .03-.04 points or higher. They will stay up there during your entire luteal phase. For some women they start to decline a day or two before your period shows, for some women they stay high until the day after your period starts. If you're pregnant they will stay high and you will get a positive pregnancy test about 14 days after you've ovulated. Good luck.
