The political thugs and haters cannot control anything, or society is doomed. Rushdie is a great writer and he deserved the award. It will bring the lunatic fringe out with their crazed idiocies, but that is absolutely no reason to alter what should be done to honor someone.

Yes, there's going to be a lot of arguments about him and his work, but he is an author who took a stand, risked death for his art of writing, and has persevered through it all. Sure, he does deserve a Knighthood, if for no other reason that we can think of very few people who have stood up for their art against a billion people. Who else has done that?

Rushdie is honored for 2 reasons - his literary achievements, which, with the exception of his most recent offering (in my opinion), are quite brilliant. Secondly, he has courage in his convictions which is a rare quality in today's world.

I say, good for him!
