It's still up for a lot of debate. And then when some of them do interbreed you get a fertile offspring. This past spring I accidentally had a mating of a guppy and a platy. This is supposed to be impossible. But I put the female guppy in a nursery tank to have her babies and one orange platy popped out! So nature has a lot in store for us!

Nope.
I've heard of platies being crossed with swordtails, and different mollie species interbreeding but platies, guppies and mollies will not cross with each other.

platys, and swordtails can..there has actually been some cases of mollies and guppies breeding too but they look ridiculous, and cannot breed themselves.

One would think so, the vast variations that can be purchased of these types must be from cross-breeding. Swordtails are in the same group too.

No. Platies and Swordtails can, but in this group, no others can successfully.

That very question is really being heavily debated these days. Scientific testing on embryos shows it should be possible to get fry from them, but to day there haven't been recorded interbreedings on most combinations.
