Why is it a problem...people always assume a gay person will probably like them or be attracted to them when that is not true. Why is it right to force someone hide who they are and fire them if they reveal it?

Gays have ALWAYS been in the military. Why people think they need to admit it all of the sudden doesn't make any sense to me. Sexual preference isn't something you need to have a parade over. What's next? Discriminating against people in the military who's favorite color is blue? Where does it end? What difference does it make? How does it affect your ability to shoot a terrorist at an airport trying to blow up innocent lives?

I think it's all a bunch of crap. My husband has been in the military for over 20 years. I have known soldiers who were gay, both male and female. It shouldn't be about sexual orientation, it should be about getting your job done.
Sexual harrassment is something that the military has learned how to deal with, and it would be the same if people who were gay in the military were allowed to be honest.
It's a security risk for someone to be gay and in the miltary now. If someone finds out, the gay servicemember *could* be blackmailed into doing something they wouldn't normally doing. I also see no reason why a section of our population should be kept out of the armed services just because of who they sleep with. Your job doesn't usually have much to do with who you are screwing unless you are a prostitute. They use the same arguments against gays now that they used to use to keep black people and women from being able to serve. It will change eventually.
In response to what Mark D said, it's also against the military codes for my husband and I to perform oral sex on each other, or for us to have sex in any postition other than "missionary". Those are or at least recently were still on the books and could be brought up if a military person is on trial for something. It's largely ignored, but it's still a violation.

The majority of people against gays are Christians and people who are closet gays.

We are making a big issue out of nothing. Seriously, remember how people didn't want Black people to serve in the military and they said it would disrupt it? Look now.

All races are serving in the U.S. military. If you are dodging bullets then would you really care that the person next to you is gay or Black?

The only problem that I see here is many Christians wanting to enforce that view that homosexuality is wrong and that is why gay people shouldn't have rights in this country.

The weird thing is that I thought I was living in country that has the freedom of religion, equal rights to all American citizens and not a Christian theocracy....

It's absolutely hilarious that a big strong army has a fear of gay people. Shouldn't the military not be afraid of anything? If they can't serve next to their fellow gay Americans, then all I can say is they're a bunch of wussies!

Homophobes, Ill-educated, closed minded and need a reason to publicly express hate, in other words scum of the earth.
The only countries that oppose gay people from serving openly in the military are right wing religious nut-jobs, examples: Cuba, Iran, Egypt, North Korea, Saudi Arabia, Syria.
All facts and history suggest that the people who oppose gays serving in the military openly are IDIOTS.

Why are some people unaware of how many people are staunchly opposed to the theory that homosexuality and heterosexuality are NOT the equal of one another?

Maybe you ought to think about the fact that homosexual behavior is prohibited by the Uniform Code of Military Justice -- a body of rules about permissible and impermissible conduct while serving in the Armed Forces. And maybe you ought to think that "sodomy" used to be illegal in every single state in the country. Maybe you ought to think about the fact that for a period of over 20 years, during the middle of the 20th Century, the American Psychiatric Association said that homosexuality (the feeling of attraction) is a mental illness.

Society is changing. It is changing gradually and, in my opinion, for the better. But the fact is that many other people do not like the change. They are recalcitrant and still stick to the old beliefs. So your question is really about why do some people not want for society to change.

The same logic - people shouldn't assume that others will be sexually attracted to them - would also compel co-ed bathrooms, dressing rooms, etc.

If you're willing to do that, then we'll talk about the military also.

It is just more ignorance spewing out of the mouths of those who are called, "bigots". People who are afraid of those\what they do not understand, or are afraid their own sexuality may be questionable - usually by themselves.
Does anyone ask the 'sexual preference' of our military, when wounded, before they die in battle? Damn!
If someone is in a war, do you believe for one moment they are thinking about sex!? !@#$%^

Because men who are in combat need to work as a single unit. It is not a cohesive unit if some are interested in having sex with each other. It is detrimental to moral to have those kinds of emotions involved. You want an army to be the best fighting force possible not a social organization to show how much you care about people's feelings. I also am strongly against women in most combat arms.
