Start from the begining - Carrie (I believe King was 19 when he wrote it). It is an entertaining read and will give you a good idea of what you are in for!
If you want a good "taste" try them in this order.
Carrie
Fire Starter
Salems Lot
It
The Stand
The Green Mile
The Drawing of The Three
The Cell
The Stand and Fire Starter are by far my favorites...

I am having a bit of a problem answering this question. I have been a Stephen King fan for a long time and have read just about all of his books. There are some books that you should read in order, like the Gunslinger series and the Green Mile. I have heard some people say that you should read Desperation prior to the Regulators, but then some people say that you should do it the other way around.
So...if it were me, I would go to Stephen Kings web site. There is a list of all his books in the order of release. I would suggest that you print out the list and read them in that order.

I always start with the author's best work, which in this case would be The Stand. Get the "uncut" version; it's just a lot better, and trust me, you won't want that book to end. It's great, well researched, and just an example of Stephen King's writing. Uh, next I read "Pet Sematary" which I thought was pretty scary, and then followed it up with "The Green Mile."

No particular order really (with the exception of the Dark tower series and The Green Mile).
The only thing I would suggest is that with the books that feature Castle Rock as the setting, it is best to read them in order as, while each novel is a separate story, there are many characters who's actions and lives have impacted other characters and you get a real kick when they pop in another novel.

To get a good taste of Stephen King, I'd suggest the following:
1) one of his early novels like The Shinning or Pet Sematary
2) one of the Bachman books (I liked The Long Walk -- it's haunting)
3) one of his short story collections -- my recommendation is Skeleton Crew
4) If you've still got a hankering, try one of the more recent offerings like The Regulators or even Cell.
5) Then, if you're still go, hit the seven Dark Tower books.

I started with Carrie and then just went with what I found to be interesting. I read a few chapters of a lot of books and picked the ones that appealed to me most at the time. What are you in the mood for? He has so much to choose from. The first few books I read were Carrie, Dreamcatcher, and It. All three were wonderful. Good luck!

I wouldn't worry about reading them in any particular order except for the ones that are in series, like The Green Mile and The Dark Tower.

It really doesn't matter, except in the case of the Dark Tower series. Those should be read in order. If you *have* to have an order, reading them in the order they were published is good.

The Stand is my all time favorite book (it is also considered by many to be his best work) but I also love "IT" and Thr Green Mile.
He also has a series of books called the dark series which are seven books (they are numbered, so you won't have a problem)
Enjoy!
