I started out by answering no to your question but suddenly stopped, hesitating. Difference may have a big role in the way people criticize each other indeed. As we know, humans are mostly afraid of what they don't know, what is different from them. Of course, there are feelings of jealousy and envy that also motivate them to critic.

I think it's our differences that make us interesting and I think it's just in human nature to criticize others.

I think we fear our differences and we criticize our similarities. It always seems that critics are usually caught doing what they've been criticizing.

Contrast as a reason?
Yes, partially I agree that it is.
I also think that criticism is born of phobia and fear.
Something internal that threatens a closely held belief.
That type of zealotry is very dangerous in our world.
