My daughter suffers from moderate acne. Would taking the Depo shot excerbate the problem? May it improve her acne symptoms?
I would love to hear from anyone who has used this form of birth control.
Thanks!

She isn't planning on using it for an acne cure. It would be her choice of birth control. I was concerned though, that it may make her skin worse. And I too have heard there are some serious side effects.

The acne issue would be the least of my concerns with teen on depo. I had so many other problems, one being a 6 month period that ranged from heavy flow to just spotting for an entire 6 months until I stopped it. Other issues was a endomitrium layer sluff off that seemed to be a miscarriage to me due to the pain, the abdominal cramping that the doc won't warn you about and the weight gain. I would not suggest it until she is old enough to have experimented with other options first. Just my opinion. But yes, my acne did also explode while I was on it.

The only birth control I'm aware of that's been studied and marketed to include acne improvement is Ortho Tri Cyclen (pills). I just switched from Depo (for some of the reasons the other ladies stated) to Ortho Tri Cyclen and have been much happier with the Ortho. My skin does look better (and I don't have the weight gain and irregular bleeding that I did with Depo).

I was on the depo for 10 years. I would recommend it for anyone. No, it does not help with acne. It makes it worse. It also causes tremendous weight gain, hair loss and mood swings. Make sure you research all forms of birth control before allowing your daughter to get on any. Everybody is different. But for the acne, proactive is a god send. Look it up on the web.

i've never had acne so i couldn't tell you. progesterone is the primary ingredient in this though which does have fewer side effects than other pills. if she's young though, there is a birth control pill that specifically addresses acne. depo for a young person may not be the best choice as it halts your period and may negatively effect an immature reproductive system.

also, it's given to child predators weekly, not every 3 months as they do for birth control.

I took the shot for about a year. It does not give you your period after about 3 months on it. When I got off of it, I got my period last month, which is 1 year after i stopped taking it. And I wonder if it will come again. This birth control messes with your body a lot. Im sure the pill will help with acne

I would not recommend the Depo. I was on it years ago and after that I had several fertility problems. There is not enough research about Depo from women after they have been on the shot. Several doctors that I spoke to said they would not recommend anything that stops the normal cycle of a woman.

A friend of mine told me once that she
" took the depo shot over 5 years ago and I still have not become pregnant and have been trying for over two years. So I do not recommend to anyone." I think she had some fertility treatment issue.

Hope this helps.

I don't know about the depo shot getting rid of acne, but you really should look into all the nasty side affects of the depo shot. It would be best if she went on the pill instead IMO..

While it took little less than two months for me to really see a difference, my acne, blackheads and whole lot of other skin problems I had such as eczema had completely cleared! It was totally amazing...
