I have used a Dell Inspiron6400 for the past year, with no problems at all - great for DVD's and my work as a software engineer, prior to this I had 2 HP laptops - the first blew the motherboard within 3 months and the second crashed regularly, I still have a 5 year old Toshiba at home that my wife uses everyday - it is a bit slow now but has never been any problem.
So to me I would say Toshiba are reliable, but I bought the Dell for the cost.

I have owned two compaq's and have never had a problem with either. Present is an nx9010. My son who is into computers heavily (works as system engineer at a internet provider) swears that Acer's are the best rated.

Toshiba makes the best laptops. I would highly recommend a Toshiba Satellite M65-S9092.

I would say Dell, I've had my XPS 15 a couple of years with no problems, HP is usually terrible. Try an XPS or an inspiron depending on your price range.

Sony then Toshiba. I have both laptops and the Sony is super fast, it is the SZ series, and newer models are out now with Vista Ultimate.
