Read the Black Company by Glen Cook.
Ender's Game is awesome. The other books in the series are more philosophical in nature, but still excellent.
Stay away from Philip K Dick, if you don't like authors who are "smoking crack".
More good stuff:
Snow Crash, Neal Stephenson
Golden Compass, Philip Pullman (movie coming out soon)
Doomsday Book, Connie Willis
Snow Queen, Joan Vinge
Timothy Zahn Star Wars novels are awesome, start with Heir to the Empire.
Check out either the internet SciFi/Fantasy top 100 (even though it is several years old), or lists of Hugo and Nebula Winners.

I loved this series written by Piers Anthony, had 7 books in it. I want to say the series is "Incantations of Immortality" The first book is called On a Pale Horse. It is about the person who holds the office of "death or the grim reaper" Very exciting how he gets his office and goes through each day judging souls. He interacts with others who have similar jobs like Time, Fate, Nature etc etc. I am not a religious person so I was not going to read them. The way they interact and their relationships are interwoven is just incredible. "Bearing an Hourglass" which is the book about the character "time" is really good because he takes office as an older person and lives backward. When he leaves office he is just a toddler.

I am totally in agreement with you on Stranger in a Strange Land. If you really like SciFi and Fantasy, I suggest Raymond E. Feist's Riftwar saga (Magician, Silverthorn, and A Darkness at Sethanon, although Magician is usually split into two books, Magician: Apprentice and Magician: Master, because when they tried to make it a paperback book it was too big and split in half). I would also recommend the Amber chronicles.

If you liked Ender's Game (my fave!) Orson Scott Card has lots of other good titles in the same vein. Songmaster, the rest of the Ender series, his latest book, Empire.
I recently read a really wicked on called The Thief Of Time by John Boyle (not sure of the author but the title is correct).
Dean Koontz Odd Thomas series is also good - very easy read but still very intriguing.

For humor and sci-fi check out the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy Series by Douglas Adams.
1984 by George Orwell and Fahrenheit 451by Ray Bradbury are good thought provoking books. Ray Bradbury also has some really good short stories.
One of my favorite series is a young adult series but I still love them and that is Tripods series by John Christopher (they start with White Mountains). This series is War of the Worlds for teenagers but is really good.
