i have been a waitress for many years and yes, a lot of people look down upon "us". its just the way it is. but i do make good money. sure there are the people that are rude, obnoxious, or just plain miserable. - and leave cheap tips - or no tip at all. i sometimes want to scratch their eyes out !! sometimes when "nightmare customers" walk in (i can usually tell within 1 minute of their arrival) the nicer i am. a lot of the time, they end up realizing how stupid they are behaving and end up being pleasant. of course, there are the ones that stay miserable no matter what you do. i'd like to see one of them be able to do 10 things at once and remember 10 things while running to get food from the kitchen !! hang in there !! sometimes i could have a night where everyone is horrible and then 1 really awesome table comes in and makes me smile and tips me great, and i usually forget about all the idiots !!!

You may be surprised to know that the majority of people have great respect for server's at any restaurant, including fast food restaurants'.
There are people that are going to complain no matter what. You'll have to remember that these people are probably complaining at other places they go, and it's just the way they are. It's no reflection of you or your job.
The majority of people do know that servers' make a low hourly paycheck and they " tip" accordingly.
My motto is, The customer is not always right, but they are your customer. I would suggest similar thoughts.. I would also suggest " deep breathing" , to combat doing something you might be sorry for later.
Humans have a " need to be critical". Most of their stress comes out right before they eat. As any good sales person would tell you, never make a deal till after the meal.
Your employer needs to thank you for working with the public with all of their bad habits, especially right before they eat.

I always try to put things in some kind of perspective. If all my customers treated me badly, I wouldn't be in the business. For me every bad table is balanced by three or more just plain nice people. I try to approach each table with a smile and a good attitude and if this doesn't work, I just grit my teeth until they're gone. Sometimes though, rude and condescending behavior will really get under my skin, almost make me cry and I think to myself : " Just who the hell do you think you are ******* ?"

Smile at people who treat you like a human being. Tell them how nice they look today, how you like their hair, shirt, choice of foods, without sounding phony. The positive reaction you receive will act as an "good aura-force field" around you that will keep people from displaying their worst behavior. If someone acts rudely, be understanding and ask them, "is something getting you down today?" Then offer an ear if you have the time. Most of all, just be good at what you do and make yourself irreplaceable because after all, you are!

I've the same kind experience like you do. But think, there are always good and bad customers. My way of dealing with them sometimes..., I served their food, refill their drinks. I'm not gonna look at them or talk. Give the food, tab, that's it. I'm done with them. If they keep asking things this and that... somtimes I pretend busy and forgot about it . Make them wait.:P After all sometimes, I dont even care to get tips from them.

I would never let myself in trouble or get fired because of these rude @nimals.

I have really come to believe that this rudeness is a habit some people have formed to take place in restaurants. They have become accustomed to being rude and complaining. Their dining experience would not be complete without it. Someone probably has told them that the customer is always right, so they are fascinated with being wrong and still being right. I attribute it to low self esteem. But it is very irritating.

I got VERY tired of it, and I wasn't even paid or tipped since I was the owner. You'd deliver dinner and they'd ask for ketchup. Deliver the ketchup and they'd say "Oh, and I need A1". You get the A1, then they'd swig their drink and say "I need a refill!" You get the refill, then they say "Don't you have any jelly for the dinner rolls? No? What kind of restaurant doesn't have jelly???" And yes, I've gotten comments on how I should have gone to college. Hello? I DID go to college, how do you think I came to own the place??

Yes. I hate stupid rude demanding people.

IF you want to be a waiter/waitress then you just have to suck it up and be nice to these people "kill 'em with kindness", or else you won't make any money in tips and as a waiter your whole salary is your tips. If you just can't bear to be nice to these rude people then find another job

You have my sympathy. I try to treat the server as a person deserving of respect at all time. mainly because they are. Most of the time I get good service and learned a long time ago that good service follows courteous dining.

Unfortunately, in our increasingly selfish society things are not likely to improve any time soon.

Sorry. Stay in school and get another job if you don't like it. Most of us have had to work in the food biz at some point. Just know you don't have to stay there if you are willing to work hard.
