My friend bought a used custom built PC a year ago and he recently began experiencing virus/spyware issues. We ended up reformatting the HD, but then I later found out the previous seller did not give him any recovery/drivers disks. What is the best way to locate drivers? I've found most of them going on manufacturers websites, however there are 2 devices I still need drivers for and just can not find them. Under the Device Manager, it says "Unknown" device for both of them. Please help!

I find that I have to OPEN the box and remove the card. I then Write down every manufacturer's name that I see there. I also look at the major integrated circuit and write down that name and part number.

Then, I log in (join first) at http://www.driverguide.com and try manufacturer names and part numbers until I get lucky.

You know what works, so look for the missing components. Modems are almost always non-functional. Some ethernet cards are difficult.

You might have to look for the appropriate CHIP SET drivers for the Motherboard too. SO look for the major Intel parts, other than the CPU chip.

While I will build a custom computer for a customer now and then, I always try to provide the Driver disks. Sometimes, I have to duplicate several drivers, and burn them onto a separate disk, since some components don't provide copies. But OFF THE SHELF systems are so cheap today, it's difficult to make any real money by makeing a custom computer. It is just as easy to TELL THEM buy a cheap eMachine or Compaq; then ADD lots more RAM to make it into a GOOD computer.

Good luck and Happy Computing!

Talk to the original seller, they would have driver CDs, and should be able to make you a copy at least. Download sites are great if you know the specific brand & model of the device in question, but useless if you don't.

Do you have any idea what is listed as unknown? Network card? Sound card?

OPEN THE CASE AND LOOK AT THE PART NUMBER. THEN GO TO THE MANUFACTURES WEBSITE.
