they're not socialist programs but they can be used in a socialist manner. The Police Depts and Fire Depts. were put in place to protect the people from crime and well, fires. But, when the Police are used to take away the rights of the citizens and beat citizens like in the Rodney King incident, then we have a problem.
As long as they do their job correctly, there wouldn't be a problem.

haha...
State run programs are a plus in America's Federalism. America's founders expected us to experiment at the local level, and avoid using federal powers. I do believe social programs aren't good at a federal level, but I don't mind them at a state level.
This of coarse isn't a 'social' program, perse, but a service that's necessary. Use of force has been a debate among a very few. Most people on the right and left see there's a reason to have police funded by the state, and not private interest, just as it's obvious to have the military funded by public funds.
Now the firemen are debateable in my opinion. I think private services might be a bit more helpful, but that's merely a thought. I definitely am not going to be mad over taxes concering them.
Again, states are more apt to change....good.
Nation changing...should be a slow and thoughtful change. And it should require real law to back it, not judicial activism.

Mr. Gorbachov, tear down that strawman!
Who ever said that police and fire departments were "socialist"? C'mon, step up to the reality plate and show us all the sites and blogs and Yahoos calling for elimination of police and fire departments. Show us that your thoughts have some attachment to reality, have some basis in fact.
Governments, especially Constitutionally-founded governments, have legitimate functions. Public safety is a basic one. So is being the only legitimate wielder of force. Public works, roads, sewer systems, water systems, etc are all legitimate functions of any government.
What makes something socialist is when taxation is used as a means of redistributing wealth, or even worse, making people believe that they are entitled to others' money.

can you say chaos? There must be some type of order, or we would live in fear of each other, and that is no way to live. Gangs would rule, thieves would ravage, and people would die needlessly because of the lack of assistance. Also why should we pay our taxes if there was absolutly no benifet whatsoever? Part of paying our taxes is to provide for the safety of our society.

Oh yes close all the public schools and Universities as well, and not to mention 401Ks, retirement plans, Social Security, and Medicare.
Oops a lot of hospitals and medical schools will have to shut their doors too, as well as Big Oil, Sugar and Wheat farmers, since they get Taxpayer subsidies (welfare) they should be shut down, the lazy moneygrubbing dirty Commie socialists

My police dept is run by our city, not by the federal government. Our fire dept is the same. Most of our rural fire depts are volunteer. I don't consider that is being socialist at all. We're not talking apples to oranges here.

Since no one else seems to get the jab on socialized health care, I will just say move to Canada or Cuba and take Michael Moore with you.
