As I recall, this trend against natural fur clothing began in the late '60's or early '70's--I think it was originally an outgrowth of the environmental movement, because there were animals on the brink of extinction because they were being hunted for their pelts to make coats from them.

In the '80's, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals began to gain prominence, and (naturally) one of their areas of concern was not merely fur clothing, but leather and other materials that came from animal hides.

It is going on today right now. No there has never been a ban on FUR. But the fur market has fallen a great deal. Years ago I could sell my trapped furs at several places and get good money for them as well. There were Mink farms, fox farms, and RACCOON farms as well were the animals were raised to be killed for their fur. Today there are not as many and native wild furs are hard to sell too.

The biggest impact was when Brigitte Bardot, the French film star, decided she preferred animals to men. She was then 97 years old. She destroyed the lifestyle of the Inuit in North America but she felt that was a small price to pay.

Looking down at the history it does not go back as far as I remember. It was the 60s when theree was outrage about the killing of baby seals for fur, but I do not remember the group that was making it public. But this is a place to start - scroll down till you see the history section.
